Ethics training is a good idea

The troubles in Mandeville over the last two years have put a real strain on the voter’s credibility, not just in Mandeville, but also all over. With a disgraced mayor resigning amidst a growing scandal and then pleading guilty on corruption charges, voters and taxpayers were understandably leery of trusting their public officials.

Signs of spring and recovery

Tonight, there will be an event that will signify how far we have come in the almost five years since Hurricane Katrina battered our parish. City officials will cut the ribbon on the new Slidell Council Administration Building, and open the Slidell government to a brand new era.

Take nothing for granted

The newly formed democratic government of Iraq held its parliamentary elections this week. This in itself is remarkable, considering the country has been at war for the past seven years, and the residents are still reeling from the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein. What is even more remarkable is the number of people who went to the polls and actually voted. Authorities said that more than 63 percent of the registered voters in Iraq made it to the polls. These people braved suicide bombers, rocket attacks, snipers and armed raids on polling stations to exercise their basic right to vote.

No need for fashion police

With the myriad of problems facing Louisiana, it is beyond ridiculous that some state legislators are once again worried about the wardrobe of youngsters. Former legislator Derrick Shepherd, now a convicted felon, made national headlines for proposing a bill outlawing sagging pants. Shepherd railed against the fashion of youngsters who exposed their undergarments by wearing low riding pants. After introducing his bill, Shepherd was ridiculed by Comedy Central and comics throughout the country. Thankfully, the bill failed in the Louisiana Legislature in 2004 and once again in 2008.

The last thing we need

An executive for the Sierra Nevada Corp., a defense contractor based in Nevada, wanted to know why he should contribute $20,000 to Rep. Peter Visclosky, an Indiana Democrat. A colleague replied that Sierra Nevada was working with PMA, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm, to curry favor with Visclosky, a key member of the subcommittee that funded defense projects.
