Two firsts occurred Thursday at Salmen.

Lakeshore’s Lady Titans won their first-ever varsity volleyball match 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15 against Salmen and the Lady Spartans played their home opener in their new gym.

Lakeshore coach Kacie Mulé, whose club evened their record at 1-1, said this would set a precedent.

“Forever, we’re going to remember this one game,” Mulé said.

She added the girls really wanted it.

For Salmen coach Kelly Cahill Kellum, a 2002 graduate of the school, she said it was emotional.

“From being at the original Salmen and now at the new one, I feel honored to be a part of this,” Kellum said. “I just hope I can build a volleyball program that was as successful as it used to be. New school, new dreams.”

Lakeshore junior Linden Schenck led her club with 18 kills.

“We had lot of good plays, but we still have a lot of stuff we need to work on,” Schenck said.

The first game went back-and-forth early on. Salmen (0-2) had a 2-1 lead, but Schenck tied things with a kill. After Lakeshore took their first advantage, Salmen’s Destini Moran retied the game 3-3.

The teams continued to play close as neither could get bigger than a one-point edge. The Lady Spartans went up 6-5 on Tourean Cousin’s kill. She finished with 11 and one block.

LHS led 7-6 until Salmen’s Sierra Ourada evened things up with a kill, but then the Lady Titans began to take over.

They scored four consecutive points, going up 11-7. Salmen tallied the next two, but LHS continued to hold the lead.

Up 13-10, the Lady Titans went on a 9-2 run, highlighted by Schenck’s kill and Hailey Stiebing’s dink to grab a commanding 22-12 lead.

Salmen finished with five of the final eight points, but came up short.

The second game was also competitive. Salmen was up 3-1, but Lakeshore logged three straight as Schenck’s kill made it 4-3.

Then the Lady Spartans posted four consecutive to make it 7-4.

Neither team was able to take control in this one. The biggest edge for either club was four with Salmen ahead 18-14.

LHS battled back to tie things at 18-18. For the rest of the contest, neither team got more than two-straight points. With it even at 22-22, the Lady Spartans put up two in a row. Lakeshore tallied to make it 24-23, but Salmen got game point to even the match at a game apiece.

The third game was also close. Lakeshore got out to a 9-5 cushion and extended it to 13-8. Salmen continued to fight back and got it to 16-15.

A 3-0-Lakeshore spurt made it 19-15, but the Lady Spartans cut it to 19-18 and later knotted it at 20-20.

LHS posted the next four-of-five to capture the 25-21 win.

In the fourth game, the Lady Titans jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead. Salmen was able to get to a five-point deficit at 7-2 and 12-7, but Lakeshore coasted to a 25-15 victory.

Lakeshore’s Krislyn Lafitteau passed for 39 assists, while Madelyn Galdamez pulled up 24 digs and Darien Loup tallied five aces.

Mulé said her club is improving.

“It comes back down to a lack of experience. They’re getting a whole lot better,” Mulé said. “The more they play together, the better they get.”

For Salmen, Ariel Mutz recorded 14 assists and Stevionne Jackson had eight digs.
