Paul “Gus” August Menard Jr., 77, a former resident of New Orleans, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, 8:30 a.m., at his home in Mandeville.

Paul was born in New Orleans May 10, 1933, to Gladys K. Menard and Paul A. Menard Sr. He graduated from Jesuit High School and was accepted into Loyola University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1955.

After graduating from Loyola University Menard entered the armed forces where he served as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army for four years. When he was discharged from the Army, he started a family with the love of his life, Martha M. Menard and continued working in the family business, P.A. Menard Inc., wholesale grocer. After his father passed away, he became president of the company until his retirement in 1997. He was active in the grocery industry and served two terms as president of the Louisiana Wholesale Grocers Association.

MENARD

Gus was a longtime member of the Krewe of Midcity. He and Martha reigned as King and Queen of the Krewe of Midcity in 1965.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha M. Menard; his parents; and his sister, Mary Frances Menard Alexander.

He is survived by two sons, Michael F Menard of Slidell and Dr. David H Menard, DVM of Ocala, Fla; two brothers, G. Sidney Menard Sr. of Slidell and Robert L. Menard of Metairie. He was also blessed with three grandchildren, whom he adored, Steven Menard, Kimberly Menard and Dylan Menard, as well as, many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to those who took such wonderful care of Paul Menard. And to the many friends and family that had Masses and prayers said in the name of Paul Menard.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Honaker Funeral Home in Slidell at 1751 Gause Blvd West, followed by a memorial service beginning at noon. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations be made in honor of the memory of Paul August Menard Jr. to New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center, P.O. Box 1283, Folsom, LA 70437.
