Salmen scored the game’s final 44 points to capture a 50-7 opening-night victory over the Northshore Panthers in the Spanther Bowl held Friday at Salmen.

Salmen got big offensive plays from back Joron Adams and wide receiver Jamal Robinson. Adams had touchdown runs 70 and 61 yards.

“Joron’s extremely fast and quick,” Salmen coach Jerry Leonard said. “He’s got great feet, but tonight he ran with vision. That was a big improvement for him. He ran with vision tonight with the speed and with the agility he’s got. It’s a tough combination to defend.”

Robinson hauled in four passes for 139 yards. He had a 70-yard-touchdown reception and nearly one from 49-yards out, but a block-in-the-back at the six, negated that score. On that drive, he capped it with a two-yard run.

“Jamal had a big night, but Jamal’s one of those guys we count on to make plays week in and week out,” Leonard said. “He doesn’t disappoint us. Tonight was another one of those nights where he stepped up. The way things panned out was he was open and we got the football to him when we needed to. It was a good performance by him.”

Leonard added the offensive line improved by giving the offense more time.

Also, T.J. Price returned an interception for a score and recovered a fumble.

Things were close for most of the first quarter. In a scoreless game with about six minutes left, Northshore attempted a screen pass, but Price picked it off and raced 55-yards, giving the Spartans a 6-0 lead. The conversion was no good.

On NHS’ second play of the next possession, Jared Faciane took a handoff, ran it left and nearly went down. He rolled over a defender without hitting the ground, got to his feet and ran 71 yards. The extra point was good, giving the Panthers a 7-6 advantage with 5:06 remaining.

The ensuring kickoff was returned to the 30 and it took one play for Salmen to tally. Adams started one way, cut back the other, found a lane and went the distance. The two-point conversion was no good, keeping it at 12-7 with 4:48 showing.

“I used my speed and saw the cut. I just ran full speed,” Adams said.

Following a Northshore punt, the Spartans took over at their own 41 with 2:28 remaining. After a Daniel Sams 10-yard run to begin, Sams hit Robinson along the left sideline. Robinson cut back and raced 49-yards, but Salmen was flagged for an illegal-block-in-the-back at the six, giving them a first down at NHS’ 16. Salmen worked it to the two and Robinson finished the drive with a running TD. The two-pointer failed and it was 18-7 after one.

Northshore punted on their next drive and Salmen took over at their own 30 with 9:54 left. It took two plays and Matt Lipham hit Robinson after rolling right and Robinson got free and took it 70-yards for another tally. Lipham connected with Sams for two and it was 26-7 with 9:36 left.

“I knew all of the defenders were on the outside, so I just cut it back up to the middle of the field and took off,” Robinson said.

Things continued to get worse for Northshore. The Panther punted on their next possession and Salmen took over at NHS’ 43. It took three plays, capped off by Chrishawn Dupuy running 27 yards for a score. Chris Gulino applied the PAT and it was 33-7 with 6:56 on the clock.

Northshore fumbled on third down of the next drive and Price recovered. That led to a Gulino 25-yard field goal and it was 36-7 at halftime.

Salmen received the second half kickoff. On the fourth play, the ball rested on Salmen’s 39. Adams found pay dirt once again as the pitch went to the right, he cutback to his left and took it all the way, 61-yards and Gulino’s PAT made it 43-7 just 1:25 into the third.

Salmen wrapped up the scoring on the initial play of the next possession as the quarterbacks hooked up. Lipham hit Sams for 31 yards and Gulino split the uprights once again to make it 50-7.

Both teams are back in action Friday night. Salmen travels to take on Slidell, while Northshore is at home facing Brother Martin.
