The St. Tammany Republican Parish Executive Committee held its annual Top Elephants Awards banquet Aug. 20 at the Abita Quail Farm.

U.S. Senator David Vitter and columnist Dan Juneau were guest speakers for the event.

Vitter urged those present to think about ways they can help make a difference in the community and to do those things.

Juneau said local Republicans need to be ready for a “knock-down, drag-out war” in when it comes time to balance the state budget again in the spring.

He said there is a $2.8 billion shortfall and that money will have to be made up somewhere.

Juneau said there are two sides to the solution. One is toe raise taxes and the other is to limit jobs in the public sector and increase jobs in the private sector.

Each Republic club in the parish presented an award for their member of the year.

Those receiving awards included Cecelia Drennan for Slidell Republican Women, Kristi Thomas for Republican Professional Women of St. Tammany; Frank Hester for Northshore Republican Men’s Club, Paulette Kloeppel for the Bayou Women’s Republican Club, and Lynne Pablovich for Mandeville Republican Women.

The Republican Parish Executive Committee also presented its awards.

Clerk of Court Malise Prieto was honored with the Anne Barnes Award as the top woman of the year. Rep. Tim Burns and Rep. Kevin Pearson shared the honors of receiving the Gov. David Treen award honoring them as the top men of the year.

Pat Brister went home with the Top Elephant Award.
