Book clubs for school age children offered at library

Published on Friday, September 3, 2010 12:23 AM CDT

The St. Tammany Parish Library’s series of book clubs for ages 8-11 will begin again this month. Children read the book at home and join their peers for book discussion, a snack and an activity or craft. Bookclubs meet every month.

The program is free, however, registration is required. Go to the branch to register and to check out a copy of the book.

Throughout the fall, the Covington, Mandeville and Slidell book clubs will read books nominated for the 2011 Louisiana Young Readers’ Choice award. Participants will then vote, along with children all over the parish and state for their favorite.

Other branch book clubs will read a variety of interesting books for grades 3-5.

The selection includes:

• The Mandeville Breakfast Book Club will meet Saturday at 10 a.m. to discuss “Boys of Steel: the Creators of Superman” by Marc Tyler Nobleman. For more information, call 626-4393 ext. 4.

• The Abita Springs branch Book Club will meet Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. to discuss “The Librarian of Basra” by Jeanette Winter. For more information, call 893-6285.

• The Covington branch book club will meet Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. to discuss “One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference” by Katie Smith Milway. For more information, call 893-6280, ext. 121.

• The Slidell Branch Book Club will meet Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss “The Dragon in the Sock Drawer” by Kate Klimo. For more information, call 646-6470 ext. 4.
