Herbert “Bill” Giles Thompson Jr. passed away Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010.

He was born Dec. 17, 1934, in Memphis, Tenn., to the late Herbert G. Sr. and Evelyn Riser Thompson and was a resident of Lady Lake, Fla., for six years before moving to Covington in January.

The beloved husband of Rebecca Anne Thompson, he is survived by his daughter, Carol T. Crawford of Jefferson, Ga.; one son, Steve Thompson of Clinton, Miss.; his brother, Jon Thompson and four grandchildren.

Bill began his military career as a soldier in the U.S. Army. When his unit dissolved, he continued to serve his country through the U.S. Navy. Trained as a pilot he flew fixed-wing planes and helicopters. He retired at the rank of Commander after 20 years of dedicated service. He continued to pilot helicopters in the oil fields of Louisiana. After aviation, he worked in Washington, D.C. as an advocate for law enforcement.

As an avid sportsman and a lifetime member of the NRA, he also held memberships with the Hunter’s Run Gun Club, Good Sam Club, the FMCA and Ducks Unlimited.
