Miracles in Covington

Our View

Published on Sunday, August 22, 2010 12:23 AM CDT

Unknown to many people here in the parish and elsewhere, two doctors in Covington are quietly working and doing research that may revolutionize medical technology.

Drs. Gabriel Lasala and Jose Minguell are on the cutting edge of stem cell research. Stem cells are the basic building blocks for the human body. These cells are basically blank and hopefully, can be trained to become cells for creating body organs, arteries, and nerves.

Already, the two men have helped heart patients by rebuilding veins and arteries. Now, they have expanded their ambition. a

Thursday, Matt Cole, a U.S. Marine, who was wounded during his second tour of duty in Iraq, underwent an historical medical procedure. Cole cannot is paralyzed from the waist down from his wounds.

The doctors injected Cole with his very own stem cells. The hope is that the cells will mimic spinal and nerve cells, and maybe, just maybe in the near future, Cole may be able to walk again.

Let us hope that their work allows Cole to throw away his wheelchair, and that the technology goes on to help more of our soldiers who have been wounded.

Let us also laud these two doctors who have put the parish in the forefront of medical technology. They are truly miracle workers.

" Praise the Lord for stem cell research that is used from adult stem cells and Doctor's who are willing to put it to good use. "

" It is nice to hear that stem cell therapies are finally going into human clinical trials... It's time to get out of the mouse model and make real progress in learning and discovery in moving this technology forward to see its worth. "
