A decorated soldier from Fort Hood, Texas, was found dead Tuesday afternoon in a Mandeville-area home.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 25-year-old Sgt. Irvin Albert Mitchell Jr., Picayune, Miss., was found dead in a home at 161 Remy Court in the Remington Subdivision off Viola Street just north of Mandeville.

George Bonnett, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said a female staying at the home called 911 at 2:15 p.m. to report that she had returned home and found Mitchell unresponsive.

He said responding deputies found him dead upon arrival and the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office and the detectives were called in.

Autopsy results are pending, and Bonnett said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

In a release from Fort Hood, it is stated that Mitchell joined the military in January 2005 as an avionic mechanic. He was assigned to Delta Co., 2nd Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, since November 2005.

Mitchell was deployed twice to Iraq, once in November 2005 and again in June 2008.

His decorations and awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and Army Service Ribbon.

Representatives in the public affairs office at Fort Hood said since the investigation is ongoing they could not comment on why Mitchell was in the Mandeville area.
