Elections in this part of the country have always been colorful, loud and full of excitement. The upcoming March 27 election is a good example. In Mandeville a new mayor will be chosen. t In Slidell there are two races for mayor and chief of police. But even more important are the other issues on the ballot. They may not be as exciting, but they deal with taxpayer’s money and that is very important. The voters in the fire district that covers the Folsom are being asked to approve a property tax millage. Mandeville voters will decide on whether or not to accept a half-cent sales tax increase to pay for infrastructure projects. In Slidell, voters are going to decide on nine proposed changes to the city charter.
These issues affect everybody’s pocketbooks and lives. Unlike political candidates, there are no forums or debates on the tax proposals and charter changes. It is up to the individual voter to find out exactly what they will be voting for or against March 27. Yes, this will mean doing some homework and asking questions, but the voter is the final arbiter our political process. That’s what democracy is all about. As the saying goes, freedom isn’t free. So, please read up on the other issues that will be on the ballot, and make an educated decision, not just an arbitrary one. Not only does your vote affect you, but it also affects your family, friends and community. You wouldn’t buy a new house without getting all the facts would you?
