Slidell street

closing today

Slidell officials said that Lopez Street from Thomas Drive to Bridge Drive will be closed to car traffic today so that city workers and make repairs to the drainage system. Residents are urged to detour around the construction and to exercise caution when traveling in the area.

I-12 Ramp

closures at La. 59

There will be intermittent eastbound or westbound off-ramp closures on Interstate 12 at La. Highway 59 tomorrow and Sunday with rotating closures and no more than one ramp closed at a time. The contractor will be excavating, widening, milling, and placing asphalt (weather permitting). This closure has no vehicle restrictions, and during the construction, both lanes will be open on I-12 at all times.

District 6 meeting upcoming

District 6 Councilmember Rebecca Crawford-Hall will hold a community meeting for District 6 constituents at 6 p.m. March 15 at the Abita Springs Town Hall, 21161 Level St. The meeting is to discuss the finalization of rezoning and current events in Hillcrest.

Early voting

starts Saturday

Early voting for the the March 27 primary elections will begin Saturday and end March 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the weekdays and Saturdays.

Rep. Cromer to hold meeting

State Rep. Greg Cromer will have a town hall meeing at 6:30 p.m. March 15 in the first floor meeting room of the Slidell City Hall, 2055 Second St. Slidell. All residents of District 90 are invited to attend. Rep. Cromer will discuss the upcoming legislative session, and he wants constituents to participate in the discussion by bringing up issues as well as any ideas, comments or concerns.

SPD Citizen Academy

The second class of the Slidell Police Citizen Academy will start April 28, and the Slidell Police Department is accepting applications for the two-month academy. Those citizens that are accepted will learn the functions of the SPD, including classes on crime scene evidence processing, SWAT, communications, patrol, corrections and criminal investigation. Students will also be able to ride along with a patrol officer to see what it is like being a police officer. Classes will be held at the Police Academy in Camp Villere.

Applicants must be 19 years or older and have no felony convictions. A background check will be conducted on all applicants. Classes will start April 28, and there will be a graduation June 16. Classes will be held every Wednesday from 7-10 p.m. The class is limited to the first 40 qualified applicants.

Nominations

open for award

Applications are now available for the Legislative Youth Advisory Council’s first Leadership Awards. The award is designed to honor young people for demonstrating outstanding leadership and/or citizenship in their communities by selecting individuals who serve as a positive example to other young people, achieve a significant civic accomplishment at school or in the community, demonstrate outstanding youth leadership, and promote responsible citizenship. Certificates of recognition will be presented to a young leader from each congressional district in the state and one statewide winner in the Senate and House chambers in June when the Legislature is in session.

Applications are available online at civiced.lou isiana.gov. The deadline for submitting applications is April 15. Applicants must be between 14-19 and a Louisiana resident. Anyone, except a LYAC member or his/her family, can nominate a teen. At least one letter of recommendation from someone other than the nominator must accompany the letter of nomination and the nomination may include support materials
