Abita Artists Open Studio
In conjunction with the 16th Annual Abita Springs Whole Town Garage Sale March 27 Abita Artists will host an Open Studio and Art Sale at the 9th Street Gallery in Abita Springs. Abita Artists is comprised of established and emerging artists who work with various mediums, themes and approaches. Several members will be on-hand to discuss their work.

‘Pageant Play’ opens season
Cutting Edge Productions will open its 2010 season with the premier of “Pageant Play,” directed by Brian Fontenot and written by Matthew Wilkas and Mark Setlock.
The play, set to open at 8 p.m. Friday, will be set in the world of Texas beauty pageants for 7-year-olds and under. “Pageant Play” sets two pageant mothers in a deadly contest while their daughters strut their stuff and the coaches plan the perfect pageant pirouettes for their young charges.
The play will run Friday and Saturday nights, March 12-27, at 8 at Attractions Salon, 747 Robert Blvd., Slidell.

Night Before the Opera planned
The last evening of Night Before the Opera will be held Tuesday at the Covington branch library. Paul Cimino will give a presentation on “The Flying Dutchman” to prepare patrons for the New Orleans Opera performance and to improve opera knowledge.
Cimino, a former opera singer, will give a seminar preceding each opera, explaining story lines, music, etc.
The event is free and open to the public. Class space is limited, and registration is required. The Covington branch library is located at 310 W. 21st Ave. Call 8796-6280 to register or for more information.

The St. Tammany Pastel Society is holding an exhibition March 20 in the Slidell Memorial Hospital atrium, 1001 Gause Blvd.
The deadline to register for the one-day exhibition is March 17. Take-in of original pastel paintings ready to hang (no prints, giclees, or copies) will be from 9-10:30 a.m. March 20. Judging will take place noon to 1:30 p.m. by Alan Flattmann, PSA, world famous pastel artist and a member of the Pastel Society of America’s “Hall of Fame.”

Arts funding workshop
The Slidell Art League is hosting a workshop from 10 a.m. to noon March 18 for artists and art organizations interested in learning how to apply for organizational grants of up to $25,000 and project grants of up to $5,000.
The workshop will be conducted by Suzanne Parsons Stymiest, Director of the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs. The Slidell Art League is located at 1827 Front St.

SSA presents ‘Wizard of Oz’
St. Scholastica Academy will present The Royal Shakespearean Co.’s production of “The Wizard of Oz,” at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Benet Hall. The show will be at 7:30 nightly April 15-17 and at 2 p.m. April 18.
