Millsaps’ Martinez named to second team All-SCAC

Millsaps College senior guard Blake Martinez capped off his college career Friday as the Majors fell to top-seed Centre College 64-49 in the opening game of the 2010 SCAC Tournament hosted at the Hangar Dome in Jackson, Miss. Martinez, a 2006 Mandeville High grad, finished with 14 points, while LV Sumler led the Majors with 16 points and Chris Ingle added 10.

The Majors (12-14) led 28-24 at the half before being outscored 40-21 in the second half. Centre College went on to defeat DePauw University 60-56 to win the SCAC championship on Sunday.

Martinez closed out his career being named Saturday as a Second Team All-SCAC selection in exclusive voting by the coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Martinez completed the season averaging a career-best 15.6 points per game which ranked fourth in the SCAC, while recording a league-best 85 three-point baskets made, 85-of-258 (32.9 percent), which topped his single-season record of 82 set in 2008-09. Martinez clicked on 54-of-69 free throws (78.3 percent), while scoring a total of 389 points.

Blake, who is majoring in finance, is the son of Javier and Cindy Martinez of Madisonville.
