Lawrence E. Elsensohn Sr. passed away Monday, March 1, 2010. He was born June 22, 1937, in New Orleans to the late Virgil and Loretta Fenerty Elsensohn and had been a resident of Covington since 1963.

The beloved husband of the late Sylvia Ann Simoneaux Elsensohn, he is survived by one son, Lawrence E. Jr.; daughter-in-law, Wendi Roberts Elsensohn; stepmother, Rebecca Elsensohn; two brothers, Ronald and Virgil Elsensohn; two stepsisters, Judy Reilly and Faye Elsensohn; four grandchildren, Troy and Willie Roberts, Laura Roberts, Chelsei S. Dunlap; and five great-grandsons.

Elsensohn was the seventh of nine generations to serve on the New Orleans Police Department and was awarded the Medal of Valor for his dedication to law enforcement. After 23 years he retired from the NOPD and joined ranks with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s office for an additional 13 years.

Coach Larry was co-founder and first president of both the Lee Road Youth Recreation Association and the West St. Tammany football program, which organized the baseball, basketball and football programs for all Lee Road. residents. He touched the lives of so many as he nicknamed every kid on the field. Also, he and his wife rode their Gold Wing for many miles and had countless adventures as riders with the Slidell F-Troop and The Blue Knights.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. tomorrow at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington. A wake is scheduled for 10 p.m. today.
