Saints and Mardi Gras — what a combination!

Published on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 12:27 AM CST

With the Saints going to the Super Bowl this Sunday, just as the carnival season starts to get into gear, one has to wonder about destiny, fate, and whoever is up there running things.

To have the Saints win a trip to the Big Game at this point in time is serendipitous. What better way to celebrate the Saints’ first trip to the Super Bowl and have a great big party when they win the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Miami? Of course y’all know we are going to win, and when they do, Mardi Gras Day will be the biggest, wildest, most amazing street party this area has ever seen.

Maybe there is something to this destiny talk. Maybe we were meant to go to the Super Bowl at this time. After all, Mardi Gras comes very early this year, and falls on Feb. 16, a bit over a week after the Super Bowl. What a party this is going to be. Any other time, and Mardi Gras might be in March, and by that time, the excitement might have worn off.

There are other things that seem to point towards victory this weekend. Rock and roll legend, The Who will perform at halftime. Hey, we hope The Who has put the Who Dat song into their repertoire. It would be appropriate. Too bad The Who can’t officially change their name to The Who Dat Band. The NFL lawyers would be all over them. Maybe God is just giving us our just due.

Five years after Hurricane Katrina almost wiped all of us off the face of the map, it is our time for something big to celebrate.

With all respect to the skills and talents of Sean Peyton, Drew Brees, Reggie, Jeremy, Pierre, and all the other wonderful Saints, we keep seeing an unseen hand in all of this. It goes without saying that having your team named the Saints can’t hurt either.
