District 9

meeting

St. Tammany Parish District 9 Councilman Gene Bellisario has set Tuesday for his next District 9 community meeting.  The meeting will start at 7 p.m., in the cafeteria of Boyet Jr. High School, 59295 Rebel Drive (off Pearl St., off E. Gause Blvd.)

 There will be discussion regarding the possible change in taxation by Fire District #1 (all property tax millage to a lower property tax millage + parcel fee) with future increases added to the parcel fee and the implementation of the new contract for trash collection for residents who reside within the boundaries of the Cross Gates Utility system.  Also under discussion will be the possible removal of stop signs in the Whisperwood area, release of Capital Projects funding for 2009 and projects for 2010 and impending closure of the Slidell Landfill.

District 11 meeting next week

The February monthly meeting for Parish Council District 11 constituents will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the library of the Bayou Woods Elementary School located off Carroll Road. Anyone wishing additional information should call 649-4580.

Export/import workshop

A workshop on exporting and importing will be held Feb. 10 from 9-11 a.m. at the St. Tammany Center on Koop Drive in Mandeville.

Parish recycling Christmas trees

The annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program is taking place in St. Tammany Parish.  Starting today citizens may drop off their discarded Christmas trees at two locations in St. Tammany: in Covington, at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds Florida Street (East) Entrance, and in Slidell, at the Slidell Parish Complex on Military Road just north of Brownswitch Road.

Citizens may also call their individual waste haulers for information on tree pick up dates.  Look at your bill to determine your waste hauler and phone number. 

All trees are used for marsh restoration as part of an ongoing project with the St. Tammany Parish Department of Engineering and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.

St. Tammany Parish Hospital Offering H1N1 Flu Vaccinations to the General Public

St. Tammany Parish Hospital is offering H1N1 flu vaccinations through its Community Wellness Center, St. Tammany Physicians Network offices and Family Medical Center to the general public.  The H1N1 vaccination will be available to anyone requesting it.  

The H1N1 vaccination for the general public is available at the STPH Community Wellness Center (CWC), 1505 North Florida Street, Covington, LA, on Mondays and Wednesdays from  8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Appointments are available for school-age children requiring later appointments.  Appointments can be obtained by calling (985) 871-6030 and selecting option one.

At CWC, vaccinations are free for Medicaid patients 18 years old and younger and persons with Medicare Part B insurance and only $10 (administrative fee) for all others.

 H1N1 flu vaccinations are available to established patients:

 St. Tammany Physicians Network- Covington, 80 Gardenia Drive, Covington, 871-5900, St. Tammany Physicians Network- Mandeville, 201 St. Ann Drive, Mandeville, 626-1717, STPH Family Medical Clinic, 711 Riverside Drive, Franklinton, 839-9895.

Tourist Commission reserving ad space

Any tourism-related non-profit organization and governmental agencies wishing to participate in the St. Tammany Parish Tourist Commission’s Cooperative Advertising Program must submit letters of intent by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 7. The selection is on a first come first served basis. There is only one ad space per organization, and eight applicants will be picked for the program.

The Tourist Commission will reserve advertising space in publications Texas Monthly, Southern Living, Southern Breeze and AAA Southern Traveler. The total cost is $2,000 for each participant. To reserve space, either e-mail or cal LaDana Williams at LaDana@LouisianaNorthshore.com, or 892-0520 by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 17. No reservation will be accepted by any other commission staff member. The deadline to submit materials for the ads is Jan. 9, 2010 and must include on high-resolution photograph, 25 words of copy and a dedicated Web site domain.

Parish taking applications for LIHEAP

The St. Tammany Parish Department of Community Action is now taking applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The LIHEAP helps low-income families with their utility bills. Senior citizens over 60, disabled individuals and households with children less than 5 years old will be given priority for the assistance. Anyone who received help with LIHEAP in 2009 will be ineligible until seven months have passed since the last day of assistance. Residents receiving public housing will have their utility allowance payment deducted from their LIHEAP payment. All applicants seen by appointment only on a first come first serve basis. To make an appointment, call or go to the Department of Community Action either in Covington at 1301 N. Florida St., 893-3923, or in Slidell at 2004 First St., 646-2090.
