The race for the District B council seat looks like it will be a two-man race.

Thursday afternoon, Richard Reardon, 62, an appraiser with the St. Tammany Assessor’s Office, announced he will run for the council seat, currently held by Richey Hursey.

Reardon’s announcement comes a week after retired school teacher, Sam Abney threw his hat into the ring.

Last month, Hursey announced that he would be running for mayor, and Abney decided then to run for the council seat. Reardon said Hursey’s decision had nothing to do with his entrance into the race.

“I made my decision two months ago,” Reardon said.

Both candidates live in the southern part of Slidell, which makes up District B. Reardon lives in the Westchester subdivision and Abney resides in Abney Estates subdivision.

Reardon said he is running because as vice-president of the WWAM Homeowners Association, he has helped his district more than Hursey, and Reardon feels he can continue his work, and get more done on the council. His priorities are improving drainage in south Slidell, making sure the police department is well-funded and making sure there are no tax increases.

Abney said his retirement offers him more time to be a hands-on representative to the residents of District B.
