A child allegedly left unattended while her mother picked up her older brother from school was found wandering down 33rd Avenue in Covington near the Helen Frick Apartments near busy Collins Boulevard.

Covington Police Department public information officer, Capt. Jack West, said finding the girl unharmed was Covington’s Christmas miracle.

“It’s a miracle she was found unharmed, a real miracle. The traffic is so busy on Collins and she was right off Collins,” he said.

Covington police found Ahsasi Brooks, 18-months-old, after they received a call about a child wandering presumably alone down the street.

The mother, Brittany Brooks, 23, 213 W. 33rd Avenue, Covington, returned to the complex with her four-year-old son about 15 minutes after the police arrived.

Upon questioning, police arrested her for illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of someone under the age of 17; simple possession of marijuana; possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone; and child desertion, all misdemeanors.

The children were given to the care of Office of Child Services.

Brooks allegedly told police she had marijuana on her when questioned. They allegedly found four grams of marijuana packed in a separate bag. She was booked and placed in St. Tammany Parish Jail.

" The sad part is the kids will probably be back with momma after her bail is paid and her court date set. OCS is too busy investigating bogus reports to do anything about the real problems.. If people want to help endangered kids, stop calling ocs on people your mad at out of spite and start paying attention to the kids that are really in danger. "

" It's amazing that the family of this young lady and the children was no where to be found. The child's grandparents need to step in and help the children to keep them out of the system. There are to many children with out family in child protection. The mother of the kids needs help!! These are your children what were you thinking ? "

" This situation deserves MORE than just misdemanor charges!! How about Child abuse/endangerment!! Her child could have been run over and killed. How about attempted murder! She will be out and have her children back and doing the same thing again. I don't think it is right for the police to pick and choose what charges they want to!! Read the charges.if they apply.....CHARGE THEM!!! "

" You know it is Christmas time. The Covington PD has enough to deal with. People are depressed and blue because the economy is tough, and it gets harder on them around this time. Give them a break. If you cant take care of your kids, quit having them. Its a shame the have to pay for them and watch out for them because the mothers and fathers priorities are not straight. Geez.. God Bless the Covington PD "
