There are going to be some very happy children in Slidell Christmas morning, thanks to the Slidell Police Department.

More than 50 children will get a new bike this year. Police Chief Freddy Drennan said his department was able to get 53 new bicycles for disadvantaged children.

For the second year, the SPD has beaten the members of Fire District One in collecting bicycles in the annual Battle of the Badges. The contest is to see how many bikes each department can collect for the St. Tammany Toys for Tots of Slidell.

Slidell police officers, members of Knights of Columbus Council 2732 and St. Tammany Toys for Tots of Slidell pose with the 53 bikes they will give away to needy children for Christmas. The police officers went around collecting money from the Knights of Columbus Council 2732, Academy Sport, Wal-Mart, Donald and Oksun Barfield and Mark Cochran.

With the money, the police were able to get 53 new bicycles.

Capt. Kevin Foltz of the SPD said that Rouse’s, Win-Dixie, Dante’s Pizza and Philly, Pizza Hut, Italian Pie and Popeye’s all donated food to the many volunteers who spent hours assembling the bikes.

Foltz said that extra credit should go to Carrie Read, who works in the Records Department of the SPD. Read coordinated the project, Foltz said and worked hard with St. Tammany Toys for Tots of Slidell to make sure the bikes were delivered on time.
