For Saints fans with heart problems, Sunday afternoon must have been a dangerous time to watch the football game.

All we can say is what a game. For us fans who have been watching the Saints since their first season in 1967, Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins must have been déjà vu.

The first half was so disappointing. The Saints committed dumb penalties, quarterback Drew Brees was throwing interceptions, and the Dolphin defense had bottled up our running game so completely, the boys in black and gold barely eked out 100 yards. The Saints were losing 24 to 3. Unbelievable.

We old-timers started groaning and tearing our hair out. Memories of seasons past rushed through our heads. What had happened? Coach Sean Peyton’s team was playing like the Saints of old, with no chance of winning.

Was this to be the team’s first loss in a stellar season with six wins and no losses?

Ah, but us of little faith in the great Drew Brees. He convinced Peyton to go for a touchdown near the end of the second quarter, and with a quarterback sneak, Brees scored, and the team never looked back.

The Saints in the second half were like a different squad. They gained back their momentum and crisply marched up and down the field at will, leaving the Dolphins gasping for breath and points. In the end, despite a missed extra point, the Saints made probably one of the most incredible comebacks in Saints’ history, and won the game 46-34.

It was magnificent, but what really impressed us was the never-say-die attitude of the new Saints. The old Saints would have just thrown up their hands and played dead.

Not Brees and company. They are the breath of fresh air that this area needs. Finally, we have a professional football team that actually plays football. Keep up the good work, and for real this time: Bless you boys.
