NOPE looking

for local parents

NOPE (Narcotic Overdose Prevention and Education) Task Force is trying to start a local chapter for parents who have lost children or need assistance. I.D. A Kid

cards offered

Parents can stop by First Baptist Church in Slidell from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31 to get free child identification cards made. The I.D. A Kid cards help parents keep a copy of their child’s photo, fingerprints and vital statistics on hand in one place.

Pumpkin patch upcoming at RES

Riverside Elementary School in Pearl River will host its annual Pumpkin Patch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event will include a pumpkin sale, raffle and lots of fun games and prizes for kids of all ages.

Stop by 38480 Sullivan Drive in Pearl River and enjoy this festive seasonal event, pick up a pumpkin or two and support Riverside ’s PTA.

Antique fair upcoming

The Slidell Antique Association will host the 27th annual Olde Towne Slidell Fall Antique Street Fair, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

First, Second and Erlanger streets will be closed to traffic as hundreds of vendors offer antiques, glassware, pottery, art, dolls, jewelry, collectibles, furniture, handmade crafts and more. Plenty of food will also be available, with water and soft drinks sold by the Slidell High Band Boosters, snowballs from Salmen High School, and beer from the Lions Club.

Annual Kiwanis barbecue set

Northshore Kiwanis Club will be sponsoring its annual BBQ chicken lunch at 10 a.m. Sunday at Resource Bank, 1695 W. Causeway Approach in Mandeville.

Take out box lunches will include BBQ chicken, baked beans and cole slaw. Tickets are $7 and may be purchased in advance at Mandeville area Resource, Whitney or Chase Banks or the Gulf Coast Bank on U.S. Highway 190 in Covington. Tickets will also be available on-site on the day of the event. All donations benefit Kiwanis youth and community service projects.

Group for brain injury survivors

A newly established support group for brain injury survivors, families and related health care professionals invites them to its first event Tuesday. The group will meet in Bogue Falaya Park in Covington from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Slightly scary

stories at library

The St. Tammany Parish Library will offer some Halloween fun with slightly scary stories that are sure to end more with a laugh than with a chill, some silly songs, perhaps a trick and of course, some treats. All ages are welcome and children are invited to wear their costume. Visit the library Oct. 28, 6:30 p.m. at the Black River branch; Oct. 29, 6:30 p.m. at the Covington branch; Thursday, Oct. 29, 6 p.m. at the Mandeville branch; and Oct. 30, 10:30 a.m. at the Slidell Branch. All programs are free and no registration is required. Children ages 9 and under may not be left unattended at any branch of the St. Tammany Parish Library.

Donation drop-off day upcoming

My Girlfriend’s Closet, an upscale resale boutique will accept donations of saleable new or gently used, clean, ladies holiday and fall clothing and accessories Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The volunteer-run boutique is located at 881 Robert Blvd., behind Domino’s Pizza and Dollar General Store across from Central Baptist Church in Slidell.

The next monthly sale will be held Nov. 5-7. All proceeds from sales benefit Rainbow Child Care Center, a Class “A” State Licensed nonprofit early child development program for working families in St. Tammany Parish.

Japanese dance lessons planned

The Slidell branch library will host Traditional Japanese Folk Dancing Lessons instructed by Sugai Barker.  

Barker has taught the art of Japanese folk dance for many years and has recently been recognized for her skill by the Japanese Consulate in New Orleans.

Barker will offer three, one and a half hour lessons given on Saturday afternoons from 3-4:30 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 7.

The event is free and open to the public, Class size is limited to 20 adult participants, and registration is required. Call 646-6470. Italian Culture class at library

The Covington branch library will present A History of Italian Culture with Paul Cimino, which will survey art, architecture, music, invention, discoveries, traditions, customs, and of course, the cuisine.

The presentation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Nov. 7.

Participants are required to bring a pen or pencil and paper or notebook. Cimino will provide handouts, and class members will take notes. No book is required.

Plant program

The Folsom branch library will present Natural Healing Using Plant Spirit Medicine with Mary Ann McClellan to learn about indigenous methods and techniques of working with plants that promote health and healing from a certified herbalist.

McClellan is a 20-year member of the Folsom Native Plant Society.

The presentation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 27.

For those who are interested, but unable to attend, the program will be repeated Feb. 25 at the at the Causeway branch library. Registration for the 2010 program will be in January.

Garden party

to benefit center

The Garden Party at Summergrove Farms benefiting New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center will be held Nov. 1 from 1–5 p.m.

Hosted by David Fennelly and Carlos Sanchez, the event will feature food from over 25 local restaurants, a silent auction with works by local artists, a demonstration by New Heights riders, and live music. Other highlights include

Candle blessing

In keeping with old New Orleans tradition, Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church will hold a candlelight blessing at Nov. 2 at Mandeville Cemetery, Montgomery Street.

Plan to meet at the cemetery with tea candles to place on your loved one’s grave. Have tea candles placed and lit by 7 p.m. Ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Candles will be sold after all Masses until the Feast of All Saints and are available in the Parish Life Center. In the event of rain, blessing will be held Nov. 3.

Coping with

disabilities class

Northshore Families Helping Families will host a full day workshop for parents of young children with disabilities. The workshop will focus on transition children from Part C – Early Steps to Part B – school system. The workshop will cover services available for young children with disabilities and options and resources.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at Lakeview Regional Medical Center, 95 E. Fairway Drive, Covington, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at Hammond Health Unit. 15481 W. Club Deluxe Road.

Registration is limited to the first 30 participants. A light lunch will be provided. To register, call 875-0511.

Children’s grief therapy camp set

Camp Bearable, a children’s weekend grief therapy camp, will be held Nov. 6-8 at Whispering Pines Girl Scout Camp in Independence.

The camp is designed to work with children ages 7-12 to help them cope with the loss of a loved one and provide a healing experience. The children will be divided into age groups for appropriate art and grief therapy sessions. The activities are designed to help children identify their feelings, which may be associated with grief. The activities will also help children to express their feelings and will help to provide tools for them so they can continue to work through their grief in a positive and healthy way.

The cost is $30 per child (for all three days). Meals and snacks will be provided.

Playground date at the park

Lakeview Regional Medical Center is offering an opportunity for children and families with special needs and disabilities to meet and “konnect” at a playground designed for children of all abilities.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 7 at Kids Konnection park, located on Koop Drive in Mandeville. Free and open to the public. For more information, call 867-4054.

Bike safety

at the library

The Honey Island Group of the Sierra Club invites the public to a bicycle safety and maintenance presentation from 2-3:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Causeway branch of the St. Tammany Parish library, 3457 U.S. Highway 190, Mandeville, in the K-Mart shopping center.

Eric Nye, a certified cycling instructor, will present a short talk and video on how to ride a bicycle safely in traffic followed by a demonstration of basic bicycle maintenance. Eric will finish by answering questions about individual and group riding safety. A bike ride on the Tammany Trace is being planned for Nov 15.

Safe Boating Contest

The Lake Pontchartrain Sail and Power Squadron will present America’s Boating Course Nov. 7 at the Maritime Museum at 133 Mabel Dr. in Madisonville from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The course material will include and introduction to boating, federal and state boating laws, personal safety equipment, navigation, personal water craft and much more. Holiday Bazaar vendors sought

Azalea Estates Assisted Living and Retirement Community will hold its 11th annual Holiday Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 13. Vendors may call Darlene Cooper at 641-2827 to arrange for a table. The first table is $15 and a second (limited availability) is an additional $10. This fee includes a courtesy box lunch for two.

Additional lunches for vendors may be purchased for $5 each. The deadline for accepting vendors is Oct. 30. Azalea Estates is located at 354 Robert Blvd. in Slidell.

On Nov. 14, the third annual Fleur-de-Fall Auction, benefiting Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic School and Church, will “pull up anchor” as its themed “Sailing the High Seas” hits exciting “ports of call.”

Tobacco cessation classes ongoing

St. Tammany Parish Hospital will host free tobacco cessation classes every Tuesday through to Nov. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion, 16300 Louisiana Highway 1085 in Covington. Free lunches will be provided during the classes. Class size is limited, and reservations are required. The eight-week class will provide the tools needed to quit smoking for good. During the class, participants will identify their readiness to quit and set a quit date. Smokers will learn how to formulate a quitting action plan such as quitting cold turkey or determining which smoking cessation aids are best for them. Most importantly, smokers will get help changing the behavioral aspect of smoking by developing an action plan for what to do when not smoking. They will also receive support during those critical few weeks after quitting.

Fundraiser to benefit hospice

Over 150 varieties of wine will be sampled during “Wine & Dine with Hospice,” at Benedict’s Plantation in Mandeville Nov. 5 from 6-9 p.m.

Food from a number of premier restaurants will also be offered, and attendees may also participate in a raffle to win an instant wine cellar, courtesy of Select Brands. Raffle tickets are $5 each, or six for $20.

Event tickets are $75 each, or $65 for groups of 10 or more. All proceeds will benefit the Hospice Foundation of the South. Tickets may be purchased at the HFS office, 501 Robert Blvd. in Slidell, or at the following Whitney Bank locations: 1338 Gause Blvd., Slidell; 2201 North U.S. Highway 190, Covington; or 3201 U.S. Highway 190, Mandeville. Elks to honor

The Slidell Elks Lodge will observe Veterans Remembrance Night, Nov. 8 beginning at 5 p.m.

The event will include a complimentary meal, followed by guest speakers and live entertainment. Col. Murphy Neal Jones (Ret.) will provide the keynote address, and Missy Spinosa of Witness will perform.

Gala planned to benefit woman

The Prudential Gardner Mandeville office will be hosting the Spirit of Giving Gala in honor of Deborah Macholl, a co-worker who has a kidney disease and is in need of a kidney transplant. The Gala will be held from 7-11 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Castine Center in Mandeville. All proceeds go to the National Transplant Assistance Fund, a non profit 501(c)(301), in honor of Deborah Macholl.

Library to host logo contest

The St. Tammany Parish Library invites local artists in grades K-12 to participate in the STPL Summer Reading Logo Contest.

The library is seeking imagery to use in its 2010 Summer Reading Programs, and is sponsoring a contest to design a logo with artwork with a slogan for use on promotional items including posters, flyers, bookmarks, shirts and other materials. The 2010 Summer Reading theme is “St. Tammany Parish Reads.”

The contest is open to all students attending public, private or parochial schools in St. Tammany, as well as St. Tammany Parish home-schooled students. The contest is aimed at school-age children, not adults or professionals.

Entrants are asked to deliver their items on Dec. 4-5 between noon and 5 p.m. to any one of the following branches: Causeway, 3457 U.S. Highway 190, Mandeville, 626-9779; Covington, 310 West 21st Ave., 893-6280; and Slidell, 555 Robert Blvd., 646-6470.

Volunteers sought for child care

STARC is seeking individuals, who love children of all ages, to volunteer in its Child Development Center in Mandeville. STARC’s CDC serves children from birth to age 5. STARC is looking for volunteers to rock babies, help with playtime activities, storytelling, etc.

Free car seat

safety checks

The Louisiana Office of Public Health Child Safety Coordinator will be on hand to offer free car seat safety checks at Slidell Memorial Hospital Parenting Center each Tuesday.

An appointment is required. The Parenting Center is located at 501 Robert Blvd., at the rear of the Wellness Pavilion. To schedule, call 871-1300.

Volunteers sought for horse therapy

Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with the therapeutic riding classes Tuesdays through Saturdays for children and adults with disabilities. Volunteers, ages 13 and older, either to lead the horses or walk beside the riders while providing emotional and physical support. Experience with horses is not necessary.
