After a three-month investigation by Covington police, two Covington High students have been arrested for selling marijuana.

Matthew Lumpkin, 18, 15396 Elaine Lane, Covington, and a 16-year-old female student were taken into custody Wednesday afternoon at Covington High, according to Covington police spokesman Capt. Jack West.

Lumpkin was charged with three counts of distribution of marijuana and three counts of distribution of marijuana in a drug-free zone. The girl, whose name was not released because she is a minor, was charged with one count of distribution of marijuana and one count of distribution of marijuana in a drug-free zone.

West said the investigation began three months ago. He would not say why the two students were targeted, but over a three-month period, undercover police officers bought 1.5 pounds of marijuana from Lumpkin and the minor. West said some of the marijuana was of high quality and could fetch $3,000 on the street. None of the purchases were made at Covi9ngton High, West said.

During the arrest, police also seized the students’ cars, a 1995 Ford Explorer and a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire. West said the cars were seized, because they were used in the transportation of the marijuana. Police also confiscated $116 in cash from Lumpkin at the time of the arrest. West said that no drugs were found on the two students when they were arrested.

West said he doesn’t think that there will be any more arrests. Police believe that Lumpkin was the top guy.

“They were both quite big suppliers,” West said.
