When local resident Greg Walters saw that a New Orleans pooch had taken the weekly title in the “Cutest Dog Competition,” an online contest for comely canines, he knew what he had to do.

“I said, ‘we’ve got to get Slidell on the map’,” said Walters, who lives in Lakeshore Estates. “So this week we entered Jeaux Jeaux in the competition.”

Jeaux Jeaux, a four-year-old longhaired chihuahua, is the protégé of Walters and Rosaria Sheppard. He joined the family as a tiny ball of fluff from Baton Rouge after Sheppard, a lifelong fan of the pint-size dogs, had just buried Salty Pup, her buddy of 12 years. Now weighing in at a whopping four pounds, Jeaux Jeaux rules the roost.

“He acts like he’s really ferocious, until you get to know him,” said Sheppard. “Just don’t try to take his ‘baby’ away.”

His “baby” is a stuffed toy chihuahua, a Beanie Baby named Tiny, whom Jeaux Jeaux carries around devotedly and plays with until it begins to fall apart. Sheppard keeps a supply on hand, to replace each one as needed. The 12-week contest began Aug. 1, and the pup getting the most votes each week is named the winner for a $500 prize. Four finalists will then be chosen from those 12 winners, and of those, three will be named as runners-up and will each receive a $5,000 prize.

The grand prizewinner will be chosen by a panel of judges on Thanksgiving Day, and will bring home the top prize of $1 million.

Voting is simple, a two-step registration process, then search for Jeaux Jeaux’s photo or enter his name in the search box. Only one vote can be cast daily, and winners from previous weeks are not included in the following week’s contest.

Walters and Sheppard say if they win, they plan to donate the money to charities such as the Humane Society or various animal assistance groups. In the meantime, they hope everyone else sees what they see.

“Look at that little mug,” said Walters. “He’s adorable.”
