Showing love to those who matter

Our View

A St. Tammany News staffer lost her mother to a sudden heart attack last week, and it reminded us how important it is to let those we love know how much we appreciate them.

When the going gets tough, more often than not there is no one who will help you through it more than family, be it a mother, father, sibling, aunt or uncle.

Unfortunately, we don’t always realize how much we need that person until they are gone.

Granted, some families have a greater degree of dysfunction than others, and try as we might, long-held differences are sometimes never resolved. In those cases, chances are there is a close friend, pastor, mentor, or other person with whom we share life’s joys and sorrows. Someone who props us up when we fall down and cheers for us in our triumphs.

In today’s world of scattered families, tight deadlines and busy schedules, we sometimes forget to show our appreciation. Days or even weeks go by before we realize we haven’t spoken to them.

Even though our love remains undimmed, we get so caught up in our daily routine we forget to let them know they matter.

So make a point to call that person, just to say “hi” and see how they are doing. Send them a card, to let them know you are thinking of them.

And if you can, take a few moments to wrap them in a bear hug.
