The park is located directly behind thePearl River Town Hall on South Church Street. The facility was constructed by Mayor James Lavigne and a crew of town employees, with fountains and landscaping completed in the last week. Rules will be posted and enforced for the safety of the children.

Cooking team sign-ups accepted
Fire up those grills: registration for the sixth annual Wild Game, Seafood & BBQ Cook-off is now under way.
In addition to wild game, categories for the cook-off include pork, beef, fowl and seafood. Teams are encouraged to cook in multiple divisions, and to prepare a minimum of 100 portions. All entries must be cooked on site.
Registration fee is $50, and all donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to Community Christian Concern Cook-off, and mailed to Donna Miller, P.O. Box 3125, Slidell, 70459.
Sponsorships are also being accepted, starting at $500. All sponsors will receive meal tickets and recognition for their support.

Cessation classes ongoing
St. Tammany Parish Hospital will host free tobacco cessation classes every Tuesday through Nov. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Paul D. Cordes Outpatient Pavilion, 16300 Louisiana Highway 1085 in Covington. Free lunches will be provided during the classes. Class size is limited, and reservations are required. program at library
Astonishing Afternoons will be held at St. Tammany Parish libraries for ages 5 and up beginning this month.
Children are invited to explore tangrams, the intriguing puzzle from Ancient China at a program at several branches. Tangrams are seven geometrical shapes that fit together to make a square. The shapes can also be arranged into figures and used to tell a story. The program will feature stories told with tangrams and also include lots of time for children to solve picture puzzles with the tans.
The Tangram programs will be offered at Bush branch, 4:30 p.m., Wednesday.
The Black River Branch will offer “Fall into Autumn” at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22, with stories, activities and a craft about the season.

Arts, crafts show this weekend
The Diamondhead Arts and Crafts Show will be held from 9:30 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Diamondhead, Miss.
Parking is limited, so a free shuttle will provide transportation from the Diamondhead Shopping Center both days.
The show will have many exhibits featuring everything from decorations to accessories. Raffle tickets will be sold both days to win prizes in conjunction with the show. Winners need not be present. Leave pets at home.

Friends of NRA banquet set
The Northshore chapter of the Friends of the National Rifle Association will host a banquet to support shooting sports activities Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Trinity’s Catering and Reception Hall in Slidell.
The event will include a meal, door prizes, games, raffles and auction of shooting sports-related items. Individual tickets are $35, and sponsor tables of eight are available starting at $350.

WWII program
at library
The Slidell library will host a six-week series of readings and discussions about World War II as a national and personal experience for Americans and their adversaries starting Tuesday thorugh Oct. 27.
“I’ll Be Seeing You… America and World War II,” conducted by Keith Finley, assistant director of the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University, is free and open to the public. The program will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays.
The program will use a diverse collection of scholarly history and oral history as the foundation for discussions about the World War II experiences of Americans as well as the meanings of the conflict in perspective.

Nonna Randazzo’s Italian Bakery is raising money for CANCERCARE for Kids through CupCakes for a Cause. NAMI St. Tammany, the Mental Health Association of St. Tammany and the St. Tammany Outreach for the Prevention of Suicide have teamed up to present to the general public, friends and families information on Spirituality and Mental Health. Planning meeting for critter krewe
The first organizational meeting for the Krewe de Paws is set for Wednesday at Sweet Peppers Deli starting at 6 p.m.
The new krewe plans to stage a Mardi Gras parade for canines, felines and their owners. Based in Olde Towne, the krewe aims to have fun, bring attention to the historic district and raise money for animal assistance groups.

Stroke screenings being held
Residents living in and around the Covington community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 25. The St. Peter Catholic Church will host Life Line Screening at 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington.

Motorcycle rally planned
Mike Bruno’s Northshore Harley-Davidson will host a Freedom Rally all day Sept. 26.
A Freedom Run will leave at 10 a.m. The first 100 riders will receive Freedom Pins. Stop for the wreath ceremony at Veterans Memorial.
Bikes will be washed from 1-4 p.m. by the Cajun Spice Bikini Team. A fashion show will be held at 2 p.m., live music will be provided and door prizes will be awarded all day. The blood mobile will also be on site.

Weekly group to meet at library
The Mandeville branch library will host “Sunnyside up: Checking out the Brighter Side of Life” with Bob Maurice.
Maurice is the moderator of the Covington Socrates Café and creator of a weekly library discussion program called “Creating Good Government from Scratch.”
The program will be held weekly. Each meeting will consist of three parts: Ideas That Inspire, “I” Statements That Matter and Insights That Enlighten.
The program is intended to help people become more positive about their lives and about life in general by challenging what can be self-limited thinking and replacing it with hope and optimism.
The program is not intended to be just a discussion of “feel-good, cotton-candy” slogans about optimism. Rather, there will be simple but thought-provoking concepts that can influence our outlook on life for the better at whatever age.
The program is intended to be both informative and social, with an opportunity to meet others while sharing ideas that are life enriching, using the library as a lifelong learning resource.

Library to present Native American workshop
The Abita Springs branch library will present “The Native American World of the Southeastern United States” with Francis Broussard.
The program will use historic and folkloric texts to acquaint participants with the history and culture of the tribes that once dominated the Southeast and Louisiana in particular. The six sessions are titled: “Prehistory of Louisiana and the Southeast;” “The Native American Mind and Spirit;” “The Southeast Native World View: The Above World and the Under World;” “The Southeast Native World View: The Middle World;” “Hero Stories and Rites of Passage among Southeast Tribes;” and “Between Two Worlds: The Native American Today.”
In observance of Archaeology Month, an additional feature will be a presentation on the archaeology of St. Tammany and Washington parishes, a display of Broussard’s collections and assessment of artifacts presented by audience members at the first session on Oct. 7. Participants are encouraged to bring archeological Native American artifacts to share and possible to be identified.
The presentation will be from 6-8 p. m. beginning Oct. 7 and concluding on Nov. 11 for a total of six Wednesday sessions.
The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Class space is limited to 15 adults. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged because of the limited number of books and expected public response. Light refreshments will be provided.

LTC job fair planned
Louisiana Technical College-Sullivan Campus will conduct its annual job fair Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in Bogalusa.
This year’s theme is “Job Fair 2009: The Ultimate Connection,” and representatives from approximately 30 businesses and agencies are expected to participate. They will provide information on a variety of employment opportunities.
The job fair is sponsored by LTC Region 9 College and Career Transitions Partnership, Washington Parish Career Solutions and the Skills USA club. The fair is open to the community as well as LTC students from the Hammond, Sullivan, Florida Parishes and Ascension campuses.

Power Point tips at library
Teacher Marilyn Hebert will present a workshop, Beginning Power Point, from 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 9 and 16 at the Covington branch bibrary.
Hebert will teach students to use the Microsoft Presentation Software Power Point during two consecutive classes, held one week apart. In the first class, students will learn the basics skills needed to make presentation slides, and in the second, they will learn how to make presentations that are more complex. Students will have use of the library’s laptop computers for the duration of the class.
Hebert is a former computer teacher who is proficient in MSWord, MSWorks, PowerPro MSPublisher, Excel, Outlook Express and Internet use.

Fundraiser to benefit hospice
Over 150 varieties of wine will be sampled during “Wine & Dine with Hospice,” at Benedict’s Plantation in Mandeville Nov. 5 from 6-9 p.m.
Food from a number of premier restaurants will also be offered, and attendees may also participate in a raffle to win an instant wine cellar, courtesy of Select Brands. Raffle tickets are $5 each, or six for $20.
Event tickets are $75 each, or $65 for groups of 10 or more. All proceeds will benefit the Hospice Foundation of the South. Volunteers needed for horse therapy
Volunteers are urgently needed to assist with the therapeutic riding classes Tuesdays through Saturdays for children and adults with disabilities. Volunteers, ages 13 and older, either to lead the horses or walk beside the riders while providing emotional and physical support. Experience with horses is not necessary.
