Slidell police starting Explorer group for teenagers

Published on Monday, September 14, 2009 9:09 AM CDT

For high school students who might want to be police officers, the Slidell Police Department is starting a Police Explorer Group to give teenagers a taste of what it is like to work in law enforcement.

The Police Explorer Group will have an open house for individuals 14-20 from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. There will be a presentation on the program and potential Explorers will have the opportunity to talk with police officers that are involved in the program.

The department’s school resource officer will head the Police Explorers Group up. The program will run during the school year, and during that time, Explorers will meet at least once a month or more based on enrollment, participation and training needs.

During the program, Explorers will be shown various aspects of law enforcement from training and education to situations they would expect to experience as a police officer. The program emphasizes leadership skills, and is designed to help young adults in developing their leadership qualities and self-confidence.

Anyone interested must fill out a three-part application from one of the school resource officers.

At Northshore High School, officer Dave Wortmann will hand out applications and Officer Devrone Vasser will have applications at Salmen High, and applications can be had by Slidell High students from Officer Phillip Coleman. Students at Slidell Junior High and St. Tammany Junior High can see Officer Chuck Montgomery for an application. Or potential Explorers can pick up an application in the office of Police Chief Freddy Drennan at police headquarters at 2112 Sgt. Alfred Drive.
