Parish urges property owners
to check property assessments

After last week’s St. Tammany Parish Council meeting where many residents complained about their rising property assessments, the council and the parish government urge property owners to check the accuracy of their assessments.

“We have been getting a lot of calls on this,” said St. Tammany Parish spokesperson Suzanne Parsons Stymiest.

She said that if a property owner thinks that there is a mistake on their assessment, they should first go to the Parish Assessor’s office either at the Justice Center in Covington, or at 61134 Military Road in Slidell.

“Talk to the assessor first and see if there can be an adjustment,” Stymiest said.

She said that property owners have until Sept. 15 to appeal to the assessor, because after Sept. 15, the property rolls will be closed.

If a property owner is still not satisfied with the assessment, they can go before the parish council Board of Review. However, they must file an appeal with the council before Sept. 24. To file an appeal, residents can go to the parish Web site, www.stpgove.org, click on Topics of Interest and download Form 3101 which is the official Appeal to the Board of Review.

For more information on the appeals process, call the Parish Council office at 898-2591.
