The Southeastern Louisiana Steel Sharks scored the final 14 points in a 24-6 victory over the Jackson Juggernauts Sunday in a rematch from opening week at William Pitcher Junior High.

The last time the teams met, the Steel Sharks trailed 24-0 in the fourth quarter, but tallied 26 unanswered to capture the 26-24 win.

Southeastern Louisiana, a semi-pro team based out of Slidell, is 6-0.

Steel Sharks’ coach Ashton McGee said he’s proud of the start, but wants to continue to see improvement.

“I can’t say I don’t hear the players and fans talking about us going undefeated because I do. It even crosses my mind,” McGee said. “But it’s not the focus on what we are doing or want to do. Going undefeated and getting to the championship has been done in this league and we saw what the (New England) Patriots did a few years ago. I feel like good teams get better from year to year, great teams get better game to game, but championship teams are the ones that get better every possession of the game. I would much rather us focus on progress not perfection.”

Jackson, which knocked off the originally undefeated Baton Rouge Riverboat Bandits last week 19-12, slipped to 3-3.

Baton Rouge is 5-1 by virtue of its 30-0 victory against the Tri Parish Bayou Crusaders.

In Sunday’s game, the Steel Sharks got off to a good start, but it was the defense supplying the first points. In a scoreless game, Thaddeus Williams and Marvin Jones teamed up for a safety to give Southeastern Louisiana a 2-0 lead.

Then the Steel Sharks offense provided scoring as fullback Austin McGee ran behind center Charles Carpenter for a touchdown. The Steel Sharks went for two and Brandon Newman hit Johnny Thomas for the successful try, which made it 10-0. It remained that way until halftime.

In the third quarter, the Juggernauts were successful on two field-goal attempts, trimming the lead to 10-6. But the Steel Sharks weren’t done. Thomas lined up at quarterback and made a scoring strike to Traye Jones and the PAT put Southeastern Louisiana ahead 17-6, a lead they took to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Steel Sharks capped the scoring when Bobby Rose got into the end zone on a three-yard TD run.

Thomas set up the tally when he ran 68 yards, fumbled on the 10, picked up the loose ball and brought it to the three.

Defensively, the Steel Sharks were tough. Corun Riley tallied his third interception of the season and Craig Fox added two picks for Southeastern Louisiana.

The Steel Sharks are off the next two weeks. They resume their season on Sept. 19 with a home game against the Tri Parish Bayou Crusaders in a rematch from Aug. 8 when the Steel Sharks won 30-0.
