Broussard tallied his second TD on a 12-yard scamper on the Wolverines’ next possession, with 9:32 left to push the margin to 15-0 with Mele adding the PAT.
Junior Dylan Paquet ran the ball in on a 4-yard score with Mele booting home the PAT to increase the lead to 23-0 with about 6:50 left in the first half.
Broussard tossed a 47-yard scoring strike to Michael Peck to build the lead to 29-0, but the extra point was missed following a Wolverines’ dead ball penalty.
The Wolverines closed out the scoring with Mele returning an interception 28 yards for a score. The point after was wide left following a procedure penalty.
NCS first-year coach Tony Agresta said Thomas Jefferson has a young program.
“We are a little bit ahead of them. We performed well. Despite the score, you have to give Thomas Jefferson credit because they scrapped all night long,” Agresta said.
Thomas Jefferson’s junior quarterback/punter Norman Landeche was injured breaking his tibia, while punting.
“We feel very badly about their player (Landeche) suffering the injury. We are keeping him in our prayers,” Agresta added.
Agresta said he felt his defense played well led by mike linebacker Shawn Burst.
“He played the run really strong and his teammates at linebacker helped stop the run including Mele, Paquet and Corey Weaver. We got much better play out of our linebackers than we did in last week’s scrimmage,” Agresta added.
Agresta added Clark and Micah Agresta played well at defensive tackle stopping the run and were able to put pressure on the opposing quarterback, flushing him out of the pocket on several occasions.
Coach Agresta felt his club made steady progress in the jamboree shutout victory.
“I believe we will be ready to play Hannan in the opener.”
The Wolverines host the Archbishop Hannan Hawks Friday night with kickoff set for 7 o’clock at William Pitcher Stadium.
Thomas Jefferson coach Kevin Kelly said his team was overmatched.
“They beat us physically. We weren’t ready for that caliber of team. We need to put the jamboree behind us and move on,” Kelly said.
Kelly said his club didn’t have many positives, but thought his senior fullback Paul Duhon had a couple good runs and Brockton Tross did a nice job returning a kickoff about 70 yards before injuring his ankle midway through the first half.
Defensively, he liked the play of senior free safety Ronnie Guidry and was impressed with two of his freshmen linebackers Brent Matherne and Angel “The Hitman” Lopez.
