When fans arrive this fall to watch their favorite Slidell Youth Football Association team play, they will be greeted with new signs informing them that the recreation area is now a tobacco-free, litter-free zone.

Madisonville Mariners earn state runner up

The Madisonville Mariners participated in the Cal Ripken 8-year old Machine Pitch State Tournament held July 10-13 in Zachary. The Mariners, who finished the season 7-2, compiled a 3-2 record as the state runner-up in the eight-team tournament. The Mariners defeated Westside 9-2 in the first game followed by an 8-7 victory over Kenner. After the quick start, Twin Rivers downed Madisonville 8-7 in the next game. In game four, Madisonville squared off against Kenner again and earned a hard fought 15-14 victory.

Capital One Bank (Fontainebleau High) pitcher Adam Hines came through in the clutch by driving in the winning run in the sixth inning and helping his team capture the Louisiana State American Legion Junior Tournament 4-3 over the Eunice Oilers Monday at the Bone Yard.

The Slidell Sluggers, a nine-year old Slidell Bantam Baseball Association team, won the United States Specialty Sports Association All-Star World Series after defeating the PAC Cougars 9-7 at Pelican Park last Sunday.

Tré Dolan hit a walk-off two-run single for the 12U Slidell Cardinals with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth inning to propel his team to a 5-4 victory over Rayne Heat in the inaugural United States Specialty Sports Association Global World Series championship game.

Giving back

Jared Montz, a 2001 Mandeville High graduate and former professional soccer player with the MLS’ Chicago Fire, has been involved with sponsoring camps in the Northshore area for the past three and a half years. The Jared Montz Pro Soccer Camp held its latest event July 13-17 at Pelican Park in Mandeville, which was attended by 28 campers, ranging in age from 5-13.

LSU’s Schimpf signs with Blue Jays

LSU junior outfielder/ infielder Ryan Schimpf has followed up being a member of the 2009 National Champions by taking the next step to becoming a major leaguer by signing a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Schimpf, a fifth round selection (No. 160 overall), signed his contract Monday and has joined the club’s Rookie League affiliate in Dunedin, Fla.
