Madisonville Mariners earn state runner up

The Madisonville Mariners participated in the Cal Ripken 8-year old Machine Pitch State Tournament held July 10-13 in Zachary. The Mariners, who finished the season 7-2, compiled a 3-2 record as the state runner-up in the eight-team tournament. The Mariners defeated Westside 9-2 in the first game followed by an 8-7 victory over Kenner. After the quick start, Twin Rivers downed Madisonville 8-7 in the next game. In game four, Madisonville squared off against Kenner again and earned a hard fought 15-14 victory.

Peake BMW (Brother Martin) edged Retif Oil (Jesuit) Wednesday 4-2 to take the championship of the American Legion Southeast Regional State Tournament held at Athletic Park in Ponchatoula. The five-day double elimination tournament featured eight teams.

NCS’ Picou verbally commits to Memphis

Northlake Christian School baseball player Bryan Picou has made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Memphis when he graduates. Picou, a left-handed center fielder and pitcher, was a member on the Wolverines’ 2009 Class 1A state championship team.

LHSSCA all-star games held

The Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association inaugural boys’ and girls’ all-star classic took place Saturday July 11 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette giving seniors, who graduated an opportunity to play one more game to cap off their high school careers. The setting was also special for two long-time soccer coaches Fontainebleau’s Rusty Brauner and St. Scholastica Academy’s Art Lyons, who were inducted into the LHSSCA Hall of Fame.

Covington’s Pierce grabs golf title

Covington’s Brandon Pierce fired rounds of 72-66—138 six under par to capture the Arrowhead Golf’s Oak Wing Junior Classic July 11-12 in Alexandria. It was his second consecutive victory after winning the Arrowhead Wetland’s Junior Classic June 27-28 in Lafayette.
