International film night at library

The Slidell branch library will hold the final International Film Summer Matinee from 2-5 p.m. July 18, “Devdas” (India).????

Doors open at 1:30 p.m. The film presentation will begin at 2 p.m. Popcorn and cookies will be served. The films are for viewing by adults 18 years or over and seating is limited.

The event is free and open to the public. Stop by the Slidell branch, 555 Robert Blvd., or call 646-6470 to register. Visit www.sttammany.lib.la.us for more information on library sponsored adult programs.

Country in the Park upcoming

The Mandeville Seafood Festival will present “Country in the Park” on July 2 in Fontainebleau State Park featuring Mark Chesnutt, Sammy Kershaw and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town.

Gate open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 the day of the show and are available online at www.seafoodfest.com or at all Whitney Bank locations and H&R Block in Mandeville.

Bastille Day

The Folsom branch library will present a Bastille Day Celebration with Bernie David and the Cajun Friends and a special appearance by Larry Miller in Folsom, 1-3 p.m. July 18.

In France, “Bastille Day” is called “Fête Nationale” (National Celebration), or more often “le quatorze juillet” (14 July), which is the actual date of the holiday. The Bastille was a French building which began as a royal chateau in 1370, but was later used as a prison by Louis XI. During the French Revolution on, July 14, 1789, it was mobbed and sacked by the French revolutionaries.  

Refreshments served will include boudin, cracklins and jambalaya. The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited to 50 people and registration is required. Stop by the Folsom branch, 82393 Railroad Ave., or call 796-9728 to register.

Playmakers to hold auditions

Playmakers Theater announces the 2009-2010 season. Auditions are at the theater, 19106 Playmakers Road, Covington, usually at 7 p.m., but confirm on the Web site or by phone at 893-1671.

Season tickets are available at www.playmakers inc.com or may be purchased at the theater. Patrons are invited to two parties: the Alvin Awards and the Patron Party.

Upcoming season:

• “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” Sept. 11-27. Auditions are May 18-19. Check online to confirm.

• “On Golden Pond,” Nov. 6-22. Auditions are Sept. 13-14.

• Try outs for Holiday play (no play or director), Oct 11-12.

• School performances are Dec. 9-11. Public performances are Dec. 11 in the evening, Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.

• “Sylvia,” March 5-21. Auditions are Jan. 11-12.

• “Over the River and Through the Woods,” May 7-23, 2010. Auditions are March 7-8.

• “Cats,” July 9-25, 2010. Auditions are tentatively May 9-10, 2010.
