A Wednesday morning fire in a Covington barn resulted in the loss of a cherished family pet and hunting partner.

It happened at about 9:40 a.m. at 50 Weaver Road. The building’s owner, Danielle Olister, was home at the time, and made the call herself. Though members of St. Tammany Fire District 12 responded almost immediately, the blaze burned too quickly to save the building.

“The barn had collapsed by the time we got there,” said District Chief Jamie Truitt. “They got the horses and other animals out, but the dog stayed behind and they couldn’t get him out.”

Truit said firefighters could see a large column of black smoke from their station at Louisiana Highway 21 and Louisiana Highway 36 when they departed. He estimated the size of the building at 1,500 square feet, and said it is unclear exactly what caused the blaze. Personnel remained on the site for a couple of hours conducting cleanup operations.

There were no other injuries, and the incident remains under investigation.
