Come Monday, St. Tammany will be short one Circuit City.

The electronics store on Airport Road in Slidell is one of only four stores in the state to close. The other three are located in Kenner, Marrero and Baton Rouge.

The electronics guru announced earlier this year it would be closing 155 stores nationwide due to “the weakened economic environment,” store officials said in a release.

When the Slidell store’s closure was first announced, the items in the store immediately were marked down 10 percent. Since then, to help sell the merchandise, the store has increased its markdown prices to the current 50 to 70 percent off all items.

Wednesday, there was very little merchandise left in the store. Officials said about 17 percent of its workforce would be affected by the closures, including about 30 to 40 workers at the Slidell location.

Managers from the store refused to comment on the closing, and officials from corporate head quarters could not be reached by press time.

The fate of the building post Circuit City is unknown at this time.
