Reader responds to Wednesday stories

As I stopped to get my morning coffee on my way to work this morning, I noticed the front page article about a friend of mine’s child, Mia Waller, diagnosed with A.L.L.

Though it was a good article, and I’m happy to see the support it will bring, I was disappointed there was not one word of the father of this child, David Waller. He is a close personal friend of mine and a very dedicated father to his child. I understand your paper probably wants to make the article as dramatic as possible, but I know that the constant neglect of acknowledgement of his love and sacrifice for his child hurts this man’s heart.

It’s like he doesn’t exist. Do you think he is not there for every doctor’s appointment? Do you think he did not spend every day at Children’s Hospital missing work to spend as much time with her as possible, not knowing what would happen next? The child is very fortunate to have two of the best parents in the world and a very loving and close extended family. I think it is very sad and causes much sorrow to David that he is never mentioned as the father of this child.

The other article was about the flooding down Lake Road in Lacombe. I must say that the reporter that wrote that story must be blind as a bat. Did he not see the many houses that are on the water? My brother lives in the second house on the left after the first bridge. There are many houses on that road that flooded, including the first lady on the left, an 83-year-old young lady whose house was flooded. And the exaggeration of the water being higher than the Katrina’s storm surge was laughable. Katrina’s storm surge was lapping at the second story door jams, while Gustav’s and Ike’s were only knee high on the first floor.

It is getting very discouraging, the direction that today’s society is heading. America is no longer a powerhouse of education, as shown by the inept children coming out of our school system. All our production jobs are being moved out of the country. Nothing is made in America anymore, and big business does not want an uneducated, lazy and overpaid workforce. And I’m afraid the political system seems to be moving toward a socialistic/communistic society where you take or tax the wealthy and redistribute to the poorer parts.

America was the land of opportunity, of the strong, of independent people who were insulted by hand outs. Now everybody wants something for nothing and only look for the easiest way out of a situation. The majority are obese and, because of their parents, have the worst attitudes in the world. It’s no wonder so many countries despise us.

I’m starting to lose faith and am ashamed that we fought so hard for freedom in the past wars just to let it slip away. Our descendants must be rolling over in their graves right about now.

I hope that we can wake up and get straight before it’s too late, if it is not already. I hope you have taken a minute to think about what I have said.

    " Scott,
You wrote a very well worded and thought out letter. Our descendants believed in working for a living. They believed in helping their family and their neighbors. When our Grandparents were starting out in life, there was no such thing as welfare or food stamps and they managed to feed their family. They never asked for a free ride. Now, as you say, everyone wants to be given everything for doing nothing. I commend you on your honest opinion, an opinion many share. Maw Maw would be proud of you. Dolly Dubroc "
