There will be no high school football in St. Tammany Parish Friday night.

St. Tammany Parish SchoolsSuperintendent Gayle Sloan said today that all weekend activities, including football, have been cancelled.

"We are very sensitive to the fact our first responders have been on duty since Gustav came ashore, and we don'€™t want to interfere with their recovery efforts," said Sloan, adding the system relies on police and sheriff's deputies to provide traffic control and security.

Meanwhile, Sloan said trees are down and some schools have no power, but the system fared well during Hurricane Gustav.

"There are big limbs we have to clear away, some in bus loading areas," she said. "We had power yesterday at a handful of locations, and some of our phones have to be restored."

Schools will reopen Monday to students and teachers, but administrators, maintenance workers and custodians are set to return Thursday.

Sloan said if others are needed they will be called in by their supervisors.

"Tomorrow we'€™ll do a full court press and make sure to take care of any issues before we open Monday," Sloan said. "We'€™re getting updates from Cleco, WST and AT&T, and we'€™re told we should be in good shape for Monday."

Sloan said one issue officials will face because of power outages is food in the freezers. Those schools who recovered power quickly will be able to use their food and share it with others; schools whose power is still out by Friday will have to empty their freezers.

"We'€™ll have to get food in here to feed the students," Sloan said. "We do have emergency supplies until venders can get to us."

Sloan said even with the four days missed schools are still in shape not to have any makeup days.

"We go 11 minutes longer than required each day, so that will give us a cushion of almost four days," she said. "We had a conference call with superintendents and the state superintendent, and we can apply for forgiveness of those days, but BESE will make the decision. If not, then if we have any more storms, winter storms or spring flooding, our cushion will be gone."
