Knights 18s compete in wood bat tourney

The Louisiana Knights 18s participated in the World Wood Bat Association Championships July 1-6 in Marietta, Ga., posting a 4-1-1 record. The Knights 18s upped their season mark to 30-7.

The Knights opened with an 8-2 victory Tuesday over the Broward Nationals led by Nick Ray with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Scott Fabre and Torin Lucas drove in two runs each, while Ryan Eades contributed two hits and scored a run.

Starter Adam Purdy (2-0) went four innings to post the victory.

The Knights edged the Cincy Flames, 3-1, Wednesday with Ross Barbier, leading the team at the plate with a .391 average, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Ray and Garrett Cannizaro drove in one run each.

Chad Livingston, hitting .367, went 2-for-3. Zac Hawkins, batting .378, had a double and scored once. Starter Matty Ott (5-0, 2.72 ERA) went six and two-third innings for the victory, allowing one earned run on five hits. He struck out nine and walked four. Reliever Cory Thomas struck out the one batter he faced to pick up his team leading seventh save. Thomas has a 1.61 earned run average.

On Thursday the Knights suffered their only defeat, falling to the East Cobb Saints, 4-3. Livingston spearheaded the Knights’ attack, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Fabre went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Ray added a hit and scored twice. Lucas, the starter, went six innings. Thomas (0-1) relieved Lucas and was tagged with the loss.

On Friday, the Knights bounced back to defeat the Katy Sting Black, 9-5. Cannizaro drove in two runs and scored twice, while Hawkins drove home two runs. Fabre and Ray also drove in runs for the Knights. Eades (2-1, 1.57 ERA), the Knights’ starter, went four hitless innings to post the victory. Eades struck out eight, walked one and hit two batters.

In Saturday’s contest, the Knights’ Brandon Boudreaux went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and scored once to lead the attack. Sam Scheibal drove in two runs, and Eades added one RBI. Barbier went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Livingston collected two hits in two trips and tallied a run.

Starter Jared Mata (4-1) with a 2.85 earned run average picked up the victory going four innings. He allowed four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Hawkins pitched two innings of relief, allowing one hit. The Knights closed out the tourney with a 3-3 three-inning tie against the World of Baseball Angels. Eades connected for a two-run homer, and Cannizaro clouted a solo shot to account for the Knights’ runs. It was the second homer of the summer for both players. Cannizaro is batting .363, while Eades is hitting at a .340 clip.

Hawkins, hitting .378, went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
