Chicago Bears’ running back Matt Forté, a 2004 Slidell High graduate, will report to training camp July 23.

That’s because the former Tulane Green Wave player has agreed to a 4-year deal with the Bears. Forté was the Bears’ second-round pick and the 44th overall in the 2008 NFL draft. The rookie said it was a big priority to get this done.

“All the stress of the draft and wondering where I am going is over. Now I know I am going to be in camp,” Forté said.

Forté will have a chance to compete for the starting job, and his opportunity got better when the Bears released starting running back Cedric Benson earlier this summer.

Forté talked about the biggest challenge he has faced so far.

“Getting used to the speed of the NFL game,” Forté said.

He also talked about other adjustments.

“It’s a lot of learning. It’s like coming in a freshman in college, but more advanced,” he said.

Forté’s agent, Adisa Bakari, talked about the rookie.

“We’re excited about Matt’s opportunity in Chicago,” Bakari said. “We think he’ll achieve the expectations placed on him.”

Slidell head coach Artie Liuzza, Forté’s offensive coordinator in high school, said he is happy to see the running back take the next step.

“It’s wonderful,” Liuzza said. “I was curious to see how that would work out because he’s a good guy that wants to play. That’s his dream, but it’s also his dream to make an impact.”

Liuzza added that Forté’s work ethic and determination will help him in the NFL.

Forté finished his college career with a monster senior season, rushing for 2,127 yards on 361 carries (5.9 yard per carry average) and 23 touchdowns, second in the NCAA and Conference USA. He surpassed his rushing touchdown total for his first three years (16) and was just 11 yards shy of his opening three seasons at Tulane.

In college, Forté ran for 4,265 yards on 833 attempts and hit the century mark in 16 games, all three marks second in Green Wave history. Forté, a four-year letterman in college, also set three Tulane records with 99.2 yards per game with 39 rushing TDs and 44 total scores, five came on the receiving end.
