Just before daybreak Monday, groggy-eyed criminal suspects received a rude awakening when law enforcement officials parishwide raided their homes, resulting in 26 arrests mostly for drug violations.

The parishwide roundup, dubbed “Summertime Blues,” was spearheaded by St. Tammany Parish Jack Strain but included the help of State Police and police officers in Mandeville and Slidell. About 70 suspected criminals were targeted.

At 5 a.m., six teams of four narcotics agents from each agency simultaneously executed the arrest warrants from Slidell to Covington. Between 40 and 50 officers were involved, including radio personnel, K-9 units and more, Sheriff’s Office spokesman George Bonnett said.

“We want to catch the targets off guard, to catch them while they are sleeping,” Bonnett said. “That’s why we do it so early.”

Roundups occur about two or more times each year, but the order to roundup depends on a multiple of factors.

“It’s more complicated than warrants just piling up,” Bonnett said. “There’s this convergence of situations that occur when we say its time for a roundup.”

Those “situations” could be anything from warrents issued in a recent drug investigation of multiple suspects or more information on the whereabouts of longtime wanted suspects is learned by investigators.

" After reading your story, I felt the need to clear up something. Not all of the arrests were drug related and I feel that the Jenkins couple should be able to clarify that they were involved in a domestic dispute and happened to be arrested with the drug people but in no way involved with them. I am upset that you wrote this story in a way to misrepresent myself and spouse and wish you would correct this great error you made in reporting your story. I want all to know that we were not included for any drugs. "
