More NRCS-financed bayou clearing work done

A Natural Resources Conservation Service contractor is wrapping up work this week on a $50,000 project to clean out clogged sections of the lower reach of Bayou Vincent in Slidell to its flow-point into Bayou Bonfouca near Heritage Park.

Xpert’s Gulf LLC of Covington won the contract this month to remove uprooted marsh chunks, tree branches and other debris from the bayou and its St. Christopher Lateral in west Slidell, then barge it to Old City Barn at the south end of Bayou Lane for disposal.

The conservation service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is paying 100 percent of the cost of the work.

Some of the trees and debris that was cleaned out of Bayou Vincent in Slidell by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Services'€™ contractor, Xpert'€™s Gulf LLC of Covington.

Previously, the service spent about roughly $6 million clearing waterways throughout St. Tammany Parish for several months after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. And, in late 2006, another $667,000-plus was spent removing fallen trees and other debris from the W14 Canal and smaller drainage arteries.

Although not yet officially approved, the agency is expected soon to begin unclogging Pam’s Inlet and Pixie Creek off Jennifer Lane in southwest Slidell.
