Orchestra concert Saturday in Slidell

Music lovers of all ages have helped make Some Enchanted Evening with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra one of Slidell’s most successful cultural events for the past five years, and this year should be no different.

The LPO returns to Heritage Park for the sixth time to perform a free concert on Saturday. The concert begins at 7 p.m., but you will want to arrive early for pre-concert festivities.

This year is more kid-friendly than ever before. Starting at 5 p.m., kids can enjoy the Enchanted Art Walk, featuring a variety of local artists who will have their works on display. There will also be complimentary face painting for the kids, courtesy of Slidell Art League Teens. Tricky Trigg, a local magician, will also perform.

Also, the Mayor’s Picnic Challenge will be held at 5 p.m., which has a category just for kids 12 and under. Each year, Slidell Mayor Ben Morris challenges the community to become part of this event and showcase their creativity by decorating their picnic areas.

Categories include Perfect Interlude (most romantic setting), Chromatic Overtures (most creative picnic spread) and Grand Staff (best presentation by an organization or office group).

Participants should register near the gazebo between 5 and 6 p.m. The winners are announced during intermission and will receive certificates and gift baskets for their efforts.

“I’m always amazed at how creative the kids are with this picnic contest,” said Morris. “It’s fantastic to walk through the park and see all the decorations, the different themes, and how much fun the kids are having.”

Bring your chairs or picnic blankets, ice chests and picnic baskets or enjoy on-site catering with selections from Baskin-Robbins, A Touch of Italy Café and Dish on First, available for a nominal charge.

Admission is free.

In the event of rain, the concert will be rescheduled for Sunday. Weather cancellation updates will be posted by 10 a.m. Saturday on the city’s website www.slidell.la.us, or by calling the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs’ at 646-4375.
