Three bills that deal with the fiscal year 2008 budget were postponed Tuesday night by the Slidell City Council.

The reason given by the council was that more work needed to be done on the $47.9 million budget submitted by Mayor Ben Morris earlier this month.

Also postponed was a bill that would affect the budget concerning giving city employees a 3.92 percent raise that includes increasing the mayor’s salary to $108,297 and the chief of police’s salary to $97,467. The other bill would levy a 30.67 mills tax that would go to paying for police, garbage collection, sewers, public works and payment of interest on debt service.

Council President Raymond Canada said a budget workshop has been slated for 6 p.m. May 8 in Council Chambers at which time the council will hash out the numbers and adjust the budget before voting on it at its May 27 meeting.

That is cutting it close. Tommy Reeves, City Council administrator, told the council the budget must be ready for the mayor’s signature by May 31. By law, the budget must go into effect by June 30, the start of the city’s fiscal year.
