It’s official.

As of Thursday Mandeville residents are required to obtain a permit, along with an array of other things, before using temporary portable storage units in city limits.

With a unanimous vote of 5-0, the city council adopted an ordinance introduced by councilman Jerry Coogan earlier this month that regulates the use of the storage units. Coogan said he developed the ordinance after receiving multiple complaints from constituents regarding some residents using the units for extended periods of time.

The new ordinance regulates the units as follows: The unit must be placed as close to the house as practical, no more than one permit will be issued within a 12-month period, the permit is good for 60 days with the option of applying for an extension for another 30 days so as not to exceed 90 days. The size of all units combined shall not exceed 1,300-cubic-feet. A site drawing showing where the units will be placed on the property must first be submitted to the Mandeville Planning Director. The property must be occupied by a building. Stacking of any materials on top the unit is prohibited, and the unit must be used for storage purposes only.

Mayor Pro Tem Trilby Lenfant said the ordinance would take effect immediately after Mayor Eddie Price signs it into law. She also said Public Works reported about seven storage units within city limits, and those residents will be contacted regarding the new ordinance.

Coogan said he knew of several residents in the Beau Rivage subdivision who would be very happy with the new ordinance.

After first being introduced to the council, the document was handed down to the Planning and Zoning Commission for review. After two weeks of augmentation, they moved it back to the council this week with the suggested changes.

Planning Commission Chairman Nixon Adams said he wanted to include other structures that need regulating like the aluminum canopies that people use as makeshift garages. But the Commission ultimately decided other structures were out of the scope of this ordinance.

In other business:

• The council unanimously adopted an ordinance requiring residents to obtain a permit before mooring any vessels at public facilities on Bayou Castine.

• The council officially declared the upcoming week as Dine and Shop on U.S. Highway 190 week to promote more business on the highway that have taken a hit from the ongoing construction.
