Two from parish receive corporation sponsored National Merit Scholarships

Addie E. Troxclair of Mandeville and Sarah L. Davis of Slidell has been awarded National Merit Scholarships financed by corporations.

Troxclair, a student at Mt. Carmel Academy in New Orleans, is the recipient of the National Merit Akzo Nobel Scholarship given by Akzo Nobel Inc., of Chicago. Her probable career field is journalism.

Davis attends Northshore High School in Slidell and is the recipient of the National Merit Boeing Scholarship, given to children of employees. Her probable career field is listed as engineering.

According to the National Merit Corp., 1,100 outstanding high school seniors have been awarded scholarships funded by 200 companies, foundations and other business organizations.

They were selected for the scholarships based on the criteria set by the funding organizations.

Generally, this includes children of their employees, residents of communities the corporation serves, or those who plan to pursue college majors or careers the grantor wishes to encourage.

Amounts and lengths of the scholarships vary.

In order to be considered for the award, semifinalists had to fulfill requirements, including a scholarship application with activities, interests and goals; an outstanding academic record; be endorsed and recommended by a school official, and earn SAT scores that confirmed their qualifying test performance.

15,000 semifinalists met finalist requirements; of these, about 8,200 will be selected to receive scholarships totaling more then $36 million.
