With only rusty swing sets, a neglected batting cage and an expired baseball diamond adorning what locals call the Old Ballpark, Madisonville Councilman Mark Badeaux wants to spruce up the large field located on Main Street and give it a purpose by developing it into the town’s first public park.

Badeaux introduced the idea recently, saying the area is a perfect candidate for a public park because of the existing space. He also said upgrades would have to be made to the park that can include additional trees, benches, lights and walking paths.

Some of the existing structures, like the dilapidated tennis courts, would need to be renovated or removed.

“A lot can be done with it. The possibilities are limited to your imagination,” Badeaux said, adding the suggestion of building a pavilion on the property currently owned by the town.

Residents are in favor of the idea, and Badeaux said he would draw preliminary plans and provide them to the public at the next town council meeting. He said he is also busy discussing the venture with local engineers to determine the possibility of acquiring grants for the project.
