Angels to be honored at banquet

Dr. Steve Taylor, psychiatrist, has been awarded the Connie M. Hulsey Community Volunteer Award by Hospice of St. Tammany and will be honored at a banquet April 24 along with five others nominated as Angels Among Us.

A volunteer faculty member at the LSU School of Medicine, Taylor has been instrumental in the establishment of STOPS, St. Tammany Outreach for the Prevention of Suicides.

The award was established in 1993 to spotlight a volunteer whose services have made our community a better place to live.

Nominees who will also be recognized at the Angels Among Us banquet include:

• Linda Abbott, volunteer with Junior League, St. Paul’s School, the Christian Woman’s Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and HOST.

• Dorothy Meehan Garcia, volunteer with Children’s Advocacy Center, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, West St. Tammany Exchange Club, Christian Golfers’ Association and STOPS.

• Pat Johnson, a regular volunteer with the Samaritan Center and a member of its Board of Directors.

• Demeta Lee, founder and director of Visions, a non-profit Youth Organization for Girls, Inc. The group is a nondenominational Christian Youth Development program helping young ladies from 9-17 discover and develop their social, cultural and leadership responsibilities in the community.

• Karen Lindsay, creator of Ronnie’s Life Ministry that sends cards to people who are hurting and experiencing tragedy in their lives. The group is sponsored by St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church and sends cards, offer prayers and supplies “Sammy the Turtle” to children in the hospital.

Tickets for the banquet are $30 each and may be made by calling the Hospice office at 871-5976.
