A Slidell man was arrested on a charge of attempted first-degree murder Sunday night after a fight between the man’s son and a co-worker had occurred earlier in the day.

Slidell police spokesman Capt. Kevin O’Neil said Patrick A. Maxwell, 39, 35210 Windsor Court, Slidell, turned himself into police Sunday night after thwarting officers in a chase.

O’Neil said earlier in the day, Maxwell’s son and a co-worker got into a fight, and Maxwell was able to break it up.

Later, Maxwell called the co-worker and asked to meet the man at Kathy’s Bar on Gause Boulevard to sit down and talk about the incident.

Around 7:40 p.m. Maxwell and the victim walked out into the bar’s parking lot, where the man told Maxwell he wanted to stay friends and let bygones be bygones.

As the victim walked away, O’Neil said Maxwell allegedly walked up behind the man and stabbed him in the back with a knife. O’Neil said the knife went in about an inch, and the cut was about one and half inches long. The victim turned and tried to chase Maxwell. O’Neil said a witness in the parking lot offered to help the wounded man and said he had a gun in his vehicle.

When the witness brought out the gun, Maxwell got into his car and fled west on Gause Boulevard.

When police arrived, the victim was transported to Northshore Medical Center, where he was treated.

“His wound was not life-threatening,” O’Neil said.

Police officers, with the help of the K-9 Unit, tried to track down Maxwell but were unsuccessful.

About 10 p.m. Maxwell walked into Slidell police headquarters and turned himself in to police. He told police his family had convinced him to surrender. Maxwell was arrested on a charge of attempted first-degree murder because police believe Maxwell’s intentions were premeditated.

“He may have intended to do it before he met up with the victim,” O’Neil said.

Maxwell was booked in Slidell and transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

Maxwell is no stranger to the parish justice system. He has a record going back to 1988 that includes possession of stolen property, battery, aggravated burglary and two counts of second-degree kidnapping.
