A 51-year-old Covington man who was fatally stabbed early this month likely bled to death after being slashed in the leg by his daughter, who was acting in self defense, authorities said.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Office investigators are not charging Rodney Cook's 22-year-old daughter in the death after she armed herself from an attack with a "ceremonial" display knife, stabbing her father several times.

The fatal blow severed the femoral artery in Cook's leg, Sheriff's Office spokesman George Bonnett said.

Deputies who arrived at his house three minutes after receiving an 8:25 p.m. distress call, found Cook bleeding but alive, Bonnett said.

They called for paramedics, but it was too late. Cook died moments later on March 5 after being rushed to St. Tammany Parish Hospital for treatment. It was unclear who made the 911 call, but two other women in Cook's family, unidentified by Bonnett, were present during the "domestic altercation," he said.

The nature of the fight was also unclear as of press time, but Bonnett said household items were strewn throughout the home, evidence of a physical altercation.

All three women at the home corroborated each other's stories, claiming self defense in a household where domestic altercations were far from uncommon, Bonnett said.

A request for Cook's criminal records was not answered as of deadline Thursday.

"After an exhaustive examination of the facts in the case, investigators have concluded the stabbing was committed in self defense and that there was no criminal intent to commit murder," Bonnett said.
