Plans are under way to erect a memorial wall in Pearl River to honor veterans of foreign wars.

Mayor James Lavigne is spearheading the effort, hoping to install it next to the new Pearl River & Honey Island Swamp Museum on Louisiana Highway 41 Spur. He hopes to model the edifice after one created by Chatham Monument Co. in North Carolina.

"I've been working with members of the VFW, and they helped me research different ones," said Lavigne. "This one really caught my eye."

Lavigne said initial estimates are as much as $17,000 for the entire project. That figure includes the pouring of concrete, three granite walls and the engraving of 200 names.

The mayor hopes to fund the memorial primarily through donations, either of money or materials. He has received some contributions from veterans already as well as a good supply of concrete and a few flags.

To help get the project off the ground, Lavigne is asking residents to submit the names of any family member who is a veteran of a war on foreign soil. Since the preliminary budget calls for a limited number of names, he is asking that requests be restricted to those from an immediate family member, such as a father, mother, child or grandparent.

As work progresses on the wall, it's likely more names may be added at a later date.

Anyone wishing to submit the name of a veteran should print the person's name, as well as where and when they served, and mail it to Lavigne's attention at the Pearl River Town Hall, P.O. Box 1270, Pearl River, LA. 70452.
