The April competition will give away over $ 200,000 in prize money, including a $25,000 Grand Prix each Saturday afternoon. Grand Prix horses jump a twisting, turning course of 12 to 15 fences. Horse and rider combinations are judged objectively on a "fault" system. Faults can accrue for fences knocked down, refusals to jump and for taking too long to complete the course. The idea is to go "clear" with no faults and move into the jump-off, which is a shorter, faster course. This is one of the few sports where men and women are judged as equals.
The GALA horse shows are expecting close to 200 horses which, according to the United States Equestrian Federation, translates to over 1,000 people who will travel to the St. Tammany area to compete at this United States sanctioned "AA" horse show. According to Todd Whalley of St. Tammany Tourist Commission, this influx of people will put millions of dollars in the local economy.
